Navigating Workplace Issues

Know What You Can Control When Things Feel Out of Control at Work

The workplace can bring about a myriad of challenges, from heavy workloads to demanding deadlines and difficult colleagues. It is crucial to acknowledge the signs of the impact this stress has on mental health. One aspect that tends to be overlooked is our mental health when we are in a stressful work situation. Some signs such as high stress, anxiety, burnout, and changes in behavior, mood, and relationships can all indicate workplace-related mental health struggles.

We can find ourselves confronted with challenging work situations that seem to leave us in a bind, where we feel like we must decide between prioritizing our job or safeguarding our mental health. While mental health should be a fundamental focus in the workplace, many individuals do not perceive that their workplace prioritizes their mental health. This can lead to a variety of problems such as feelings of helplessness and hopelessness and other symptoms such as problems with motivation, focus, self-esteem, and somatic complaints. Sometimes others may have suggestions for us when we are in difficult work situations with good intentions, but some of the suggestions are more straightforward to talk about than to actually accomplish. A common suggestion might involve someone saying, “Consider resigning from your job soon.”

There are people who are able to quickly exit an unsuitable workplace, but many do not have this option. Regardless of how long someone needs to remain in their workplace, mental health cannot be pushed aside. In situations of workplace and other stresses, it can be advantageous to direct our attention towards what we can control.

What We Can Control

In the midst of a stressful workplace environment, it is essential to recognize that certain things are within our grasp. While we may not have control over many external factors or the actions of others, we can engage in certain activities that can improve our mental health. This is done by practicing activities such as self-care, emotional regulation, contacting Employee Assistance Programs, and Advocating for Yourself.

Practice Self-care

Self-care is a frequently used term in today’s society, yet its significance cannot be overstated. It encompasses a wide spectrum of activities, from physical exercise and healthy eating to mindfulness practices and seeking support when needed. It is a personal commitment to maintaining our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. A well-nurtured self is better equipped to navigate life’s challenges. In essence, self-care is not just a buzzword; it is an essential part of human existence and necessary to lead fulfilling lives.

Practice Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation helps with areas such as stress reduction, preventing burnout, better relationships with others and ourselves, enhanced productivity, and self-awareness. Self-awareness is directly related to better mental health. It plays a significant role in understanding, managing, and improving your emotional and psychological well-being.

 Contact Employee Assistance Programs

Many work places offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) covered by the employer, which can offer a number of benefits. It provides a confidential space for employees to discuss work-related and personal challenges. EAP’s also typically offer access to trained professionals who can offer guidance, support, and practical solutions to help individuals navigate their difficulties. These programs also often extend beyond counselling services, offering resources and referrals for a wide range of issues such as financial problems and legal support.

Advocate for Yourself

In the workplace, there can be some different avenues for self-advocacy. The stress of the job can make it difficult to consider the options. Effective means of self-advocacy often begin with engaging in dialogue with management and/or colleagues. Unfortunately, this dialogue is not fruitful for some people for various reasons and it may be beneficial to explore the support of the union if it is available. Furthermore, each province has government-established employment standards, which are readily available for online access.

Professional Support

Navigating workplace challenges can be a daunting task. These challenges can lead to overwhelm and stress, which can significantly impact mental health. During stressful times seeking support from a Psychotherapist can prove worthwhile in mitigating symptoms. At times, individuals can also find it beneficial to seek counselling assistance in order to enhance their assertiveness abilities and lower their anxieties when voicing their needs and concerns.
